The theory of classical computation, which is at the basis of present-day information technology, uses classical physics and it is therefore fundamentally inadequate to describe information processing in quantum systems such as atoms and molecules. Yet logic gates and wires, the basic constituents of computers and communication devices, are becoming smaller and smaller; soon they will be made out of only a handful of atoms. If this process is to continue in the future, new quantum technology must replace or supplement what we have now. In addition, quantum technologies can support entirely new modes of information processing and communication based on quantum principles.
Our research covers a wide range of topics from foundations of quantum theory to exciting new applications. The current major themes of our research are introduced below.
